Challenge:

A 7-week long challenge around envisioning the future of retail held by Publicis Groupe in partnership with NYC Media Lab. LAMA is an immersive in-store navigation system comprised of a mobile application and a complementing light installation. Using a shopping list provided by the user on the mobile app, LAMA uses a ceiling-installed light display to deliver a guided retail experience. The app translates the benefits of online shopping for a physical space by providing customized point-of-sale opportunities to shoppers, based on their locations within the store. LAMA is framed, designed and implemented by Joanna Chin (Narrative Specialist), Saman Tehrani (Technologist), and Shakti Mb (UX Designer).

Process:

The team went through a three-phase design process: 1- Study on current infrastructure and requirement gathering 2- System design, specification and feasibility study 3- Prototyping and user testing. Alongside the idea, our team delivered a preliminary feel and functional prototype for the mobile application. In addition to that, a simulation software was developed in C++ to prove the feasibility of the route finding and the lighting installation. The team conducted two rounds of user testing both for the mobile application and the physical light installation system.
